The Honours of Scotland were hidden by command of the Governor of Castle Dunnottar (seat of the Earl Marischal) in a nearby church when it became apparent that Cromwell's forces would soon take the castle. The Chief's motto: Quae Amissa Salva recalls the event; meaning: What was lost is found!
